Today the Supreme Court has ruled that the Defense of
Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. Proposition 8 was also struck
down. That means the federal government will now recognize marriage for
same-sex couples and couples will be able to marry in 13 states and the
District of Columbia, including (and once again in) our nation’s most
populous state, California.
This is a very historic moment for the entire LGBT
community. And even though we celebrate this with great joy, we need to
remind ourselves that the battle for equality remains ongoing.
You can be sure that as the community gathers to celebrate
San Francisco Gay Pride this coming weekend the party will be non-stop.
Let’s also take time to pause and reflect on how fortunate we are to
finally come to this point in our own personal history and look with
renewed hope to what lies ahead.
Be safe and always remember that no matter how bad things seem, in the end — Love always wins!
